Payload vs Towing Capacity: What Is the Difference?
The short answer: payload is the weight a vehicle can carry in the cab and bed, including passengers, cargo and the tongue weight of a trailer. Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight the vehicle can pull. They are separate limits, and you must stay within both.

Ratings vary by model year, cab, bed, engine, axle ratio, drive system and options, even within the same model. Find the exact figures on the vehicle's door-jamb label and in the manufacturer's information for that configuration. Do not rely on a model's headline number alone.
Use a Margin
Do not plan to operate at the limit. Allow a margin for safety, hills and changing conditions, and follow the owner's manual.
