EV Charging Basics: Home, Public and Cold-Weather Charging
The short answer: there are three common charging speeds. Level 1 uses a standard household outlet and is the slowest. Level 2 uses a 240-volt circuit, similar to a dryer outlet, and is the usual choice for home and workplace charging. DC fast charging is found at public stations and is the quickest, but charging speed varies by vehicle and conditions.
Charging Levels
| Level | Power source | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Standard 120-volt outlet | Overnight top-ups; very slow |
| Level 2 | 240-volt circuit and charging equipment | Home, workplace and many public stations |
| DC fast charging | High-power public station | Road trips and quick stops |
Home vs Public Charging
Home charging is the most convenient and is where most EV owners do most of their charging. If you rent or park on the street, check what is available at your building, workplace or nearby public stations before you commit. Installing home charging equipment may require an electrician; costs and requirements vary.
Charging in Cold Weather
Cold temperatures can reduce driving range and make charging slower, especially with a cold battery. Preconditioning the cabin and battery while plugged in, where the vehicle supports it, can help. Allow extra range margin on very cold days.
Connector Types
Connector standards in North America have been changing. Confirm the connector and any adapter needs for the specific vehicle you are considering and the stations you expect to use.
